Answering service, virtual receptionist, call centre, part-time hire, AI. Marketing copy uses these more or less interchangeably, and they mean genuinely different things once a stranger is actually on the line.
The questions that separate them are always the same four. Who holds your prices. Who can see your calendar. Who can book, as opposed to promise a callback. And who is only ever going to take a message and hand you a list to work through in the morning.
These compare the options on that basis rather than on feature tables.

Every AI builder demo ends the same way: the URL loads, the video cuts. Nobody films the Tuesday night when the page is live, the phone is ringing, and you're flat on your back under a sink.

Answering services and virtual receptionists sound identical on the homepage and quote you very differently. The real split is how far into your business each one is allowed to go, plus a whole category of work that neither of them was built to touch.

One is a person you train. The other is a room full of people you don't. Where each one helps, where each one breaks, and what happens to the call that comes in at 7:14 on a Tuesday night.

One bills by the minute to take a message. The other is engineered to absorb volume you don't have. What each is built for, who each suits, and why a two-van business needs neither.

Nine months in, you want to change one price on your own website. It takes eleven days and an email to a man called Dan. The question agencies leave out of the pitch is simpler than speed or cost: whose name is on the domain, and whose Stripe account does the money land in?

A remote assistant can answer your phone at 2am. She still can't tell a caller what you'd charge to reseal four hundred square feet of travertine, and that's the call you're actually losing.

Read the timestamps on last month's form fills, then read your call log. Two lists, same business, two completely different species of human, and only one of them is holding a card.

Twenty-five hours a week at 18 dollars an hour isn't 23,400 a year. Add employer payroll tax, workers' comp, a headset and the hiring you'll do all over again, and you're at 26,882 for coverage of fourteen percent of the calendar.

The AI app builder market has a clear ceiling. Every major platform generates your application, hands you a list of third-party tools to configure, and calls it done. Here is an honest look at what each one delivers and where each one stops.
